Johannesburg, 02 June 2026. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration celebrating South African sporting excellence, Hyundai Automotive South Africa has united football star Teboho Mokoena and Rugby World Cup-winning former Springbok captain John Smit in an inspiring new campaign titled: ‘When Football Meets Rugby.’
At just 28, Mokoena has become one of South Africa’s most influential footballers. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has helped his club dominate domestic and continental football. His leadership and consistency have earned him recognition as one Bafana Bafana’s leading midfielders.
Standing opposite him was one of South Africa’s most respected rugby figures. Smit captained the Springboks in a record 83 Tests and famously led South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory in 2007. Widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in world rugby, Smit’s leadership legacy continues to influence athletes and business leaders alike.
During the campaign engagement, Smit shared personal leadership lessons from his World Cup-winning journey, including handling pressure, earning trust within a team environment and maintaining focus during moments of national expectation.
“Leadership is not about titles but about responsibility, consistency and inspiring others when it matters most,” said Smit. “It was such a special occasion to meet and share my experiences with Teboho, a talented player who represents South African footballing excellence.”
Mokoena described the interaction as a defining moment in his own leadership journey. “To learn from someone like John, who has achieved greatness on the world stage, was truly inspiring,” said Mokoena. “His mindset, discipline and leadership lessons have motivated me more as I prepare for the biggest moment of my career.”
Tshiamo Tladi, Hyundai Automotive South Africa Marketing Director said the campaign reflected Hyundai’s commitment of celebrating leadership, on and off the field. “For the first time, we saw John Smit score a football penalty and Teboho scrum and score a rugby try. Those symbolic moments showed that greatness begins when leaders are willing to step outside their comfort zones and in the process, inspire each other.”
